Rescue Health Care Day - New York City
April 1, 2000 (April Fools Day) in Washington Square Park
Marches and rallies were held coast to coast. Nurse Practitioners,
nurses, physicians, other healthcare providers, and consumers
protested the devastating effects of cost cutting on patient care.
A large and attentive crowd stood for two solid hours listening
to the parade of speakers.
Wearing dunce caps for "fools" and armed with whistles
to "blow the whistle", consumers and health care professionals
told horror stories and performed skits. At noon a moment of silence
was observed for those who have suffered.
Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, chair of the NYS Assembly Health
Committee spoke to the rally in Washington Square Park, as did
our own Susan Moscou. Other speakers included representatives
of National Assoc. of Social Workers (NASW), NYS Psychological
Assoc.(NYSPA), Assoc. of Black Psychologists, American Medical
Students Assoc., Nurse Practitioners of New York(NPNY), NYS Nurses
Assoc.(NYSNA) and many others.
Rallies also took place in more than 20 cities across the
USA.
What our health care system needs:
- UNIVERSALITY - Health care truly accessible to everyone.
- COMPREHENSIVENESS - Full range of services. Treat illness
as well as maintain heath.
- AFFORDABILITY - No financial barriers to good care.
- QUALITY CARE - A uniform system of quality for all.
- AUTONOMY FOR PATIENT AND PRATITIONER - Preserve confidentiality.
Keep decision-making in the consulting room.
- ACCOUNTABILITY TO THE PUBLIC - Insurers, HMO's and pracitioners
must be responsible for their decisions and use of public resources.
